Well, because this was the first commercially available Worcestershire sauce recipe in print! It was printed in Cincinnati by the H. J. Heinz Company in 1870 and was printed on two sheets of paper measuring 8x10 inches each. The recipe was printed in an article about George Washington Carver written by Edward Harper in 1918. The original printing of the Worcestershire sauce recipe was made to look like a pharmaceutical pamphlet that included several types of "medicines". The article was printed in an attempt to promote the health benefits Worcestershire sauce could provide. After the printing, the pages were put in a binder to be sold at drug stores. This is where they were discovered during the late 1970s. It is unknown how many copies of this pamphlet were printed, but it can be assumed that at least a few thousand hand-bound copies were created before they were all destroyed during World War I. The pages were then held by the Cincinnati Historical Society for many years without incident. In the late 1970s, a member of the society found them and gave them to Edward Harper, a journalism professor at Georgetown University, who was currently working on a book about George Washington Carver. Harper was unaware of their significance and used them in his research before he returned them to the Cincinnati Historical Society, where they remained for about 20 more years. Nobody took notice of their value until 1994 when Richard Metzger discovered the pamphlet among the Cincinnati Historical Society's collection and recognized it as an early print of Worcestershire sauce. After this discovery, its value increased greatly when he realized how rare it actually was. The original pamphlet was eventually acquired by Robert Venosa, an art collector and publisher of the magazine "Taboo". With the help of his partners, he had it reprinted in 2013 at a cost of $50,000. The production of the pamphlet was done entirely by hand because modern technology would not have preserved it to its original condition. This is why so many people are willing to pay so much for it today. "Taboo" featured the reprinting in its September 2013 issue, even though it had already made its way to eBay for about $2,000 each. Before that, however, there were copies printed here and there that made their way into the hands of various collectors. The reprinting of the Worcestershire sauce recipe was done two years after the original article was published, but the printing process was not changed. This is why it looks just like the original print. The only difference between this reprint and the original is that one sheet is printed on both sides of paper rather than just one. As you can see in the image below, there is also an inscription on one of the pages with "H. J Heinz", which makes it clear that this was not printed at a drug store, but by an actual pharmaceutical company. One sheet measures 8x10 inches and contains 7 pages printed on both sides of paper (see above). eccc085e13
